How PPE Saves Lives

Our first example comes from Canada, where a former cook decided to leave his job in the food industry and become a crane operator. When he started out in his new vocation, he learned the importance of wearing his hard hat, among other PPE items. One day, he learned the hard way just how important that single item could be. A 40 kg aluminium joist fell on his head while he was working on a construction site. Although he did sustain a broken neck, as well as injuries to his shoulder and lungs, he was wearing his hard hat, which meant that he did not suffer any serious injuries to his head. Without his hard hat, he could have suffered irreversible brain damage, and death would have been very likely. After 110 days in recovery, he was back at work.

Arc flash is a major occupational risk for many workers – not only electrical technicians. Sometimes, construction workers and civil engineering teams are equally at risk. From the UK, we have the story of a man named Mitchell, who was using a shovel to help dig a ditch. His shovel struck an electrical cable, leading to an explosive arc flash incident. Thankfully, Mitchell had been supplied with arc flash protective gear, which he was wearing at the time. He dug his shovel into the dirt and the next thing he knew, he saw a massive flash flaring up towards his chest and face. He looked down to discover that the jacket he was wearing had been thoroughly burned. Taking off the jacket, he checked himself for injuries, only to find that the flash had not touched his skin at all. Were it not for his PPE, he would have sustained critical burns on his chest and face.
