Welding is an important function in many industries. It is also a job that comes with a variety of hazards. The sparks and molten metal spatter produced when welding can cause serious injury. To protect against these hazards, welders need quality protective clothing and accessories. In turn, that protective clothing must be carefully maintained in order to remain safe and offer maximum protection. CHARNAUD® offers advice on how to inspect and maintain welding gear.

Caring For Welding PPE

The key elements in welding PPC/E are protective clothing, gloves, boots, helmets and masks. Each of these items has a particular life cycle and wears in different ways and over different periods of time. In order to get the most out of each item of welding PPE, it is vital to inspect and care for them correctly.

Protective clothing, such as overalls, jackets and coats, should be checked regularly for wear, tearholes or tears. Repairs must be made as soon as any are found. Gloves must always be checked to ensure that they are the correct fit for the user – snug but never tight. Any signs of wear could compromise safety, as welders use these gloves to handle welding machinery and workpieces that might be hot to the touch. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning and repairing gloves.

Helmets and masks must also be checked to ensure that they are the correct fit. There should be no risk of them slipping off or shifting while the welder is working. Signs of damage, such as scratches and cracks, must be noted immediately. Such masks or helmets should either be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. It is best not to wear masks that have any marks or scratches.
