Although extreme cold and open flames appear, at first, to be completely opposite, there are many workers who face both in the midst of their everyday duties. Security workers, mine maintenance workers and people who work in industrial freezers, for example, could have to deal with both risks. CHARNAUD® explains how workers can be protected in these conditions, especially with our own ZERO-TECH® Flame Resistant PPE range.

Protection Against Cold Stress and Open Flames

When a worker heads out to handle a job in the middle of a winter night, he or she should always be protected against both the cold environment and the risk of flame. Hypothermia is a strong possibility on such a cold night, especially if the worker is exposed to the elements for an extended period. At the same time, the work may carry the risk of explosions and fire. A good PPE provision ensures combined protection against all these risks.

The right PPE would have to be appropriately layered for thermal insulation which offers protection against heat and flame. The outer layer should consist of a waterproof fabric that is also flame resistant (FR). The middle layer should be constructed to provide warmth.. Finally, the base layer should have strong moisture-wicking capabilities, to keep the wearer dry.

Face protection should include appropriate balaclavas, caps or masks, while the hands should be covered with warm, insulating gloves that do not impede the wearers ability to hold tools and work efficiently. Finally, the feet should be clad in a good pair of socks inside a pair of insulating, waterproof boots.
