If your workers engage in vital but hazardous work in the daily course of their duties, they need protection. Extreme heat or extreme cold can all cause people serious harm to human beings, and yet many people – perhaps your employees – have to expose themselves to these conditions frequently in order to carry out important work without. CHARNAUD®’s mission is to provide robust and effective personal protection equipment (PPE) to protect workers in those extreme conditions. The question for you is: how do you select the appropriate industrial garments for the exact hazards that your workers face every day?

PPE for Extreme Conditions

Firstly, what are the most common extreme conditions that workers face? Heat, height, cold, environments filled with harmful chemicals, and heavy machinery, all create working conditions that could create serious harm for workers. The PPE you choose should be carefully selected to provide protection against the specific risks of your working environment.

For example, workers who face extreme heat – firefighters, welders, metal workers and others – are at risk of burns, heat exhaustion and other injuries. They need fire-retardant, moisture-wicking, heat-resistant clothing. Look for clothing that is treated with fire-resistant chemicals or made from fire-resistant fibres. The garments you choose should meet the appropriate international standards, such as EN 469, EN ISO 14116 and SANS 50469, among others. Electrical workers, who are at risk of arc flash and other hazards, need similar protection.

For working in cold conditions, garments that are quilted, layered and waterproof – as well as flame-resistant – are essential for workers’ safety. Workers who operate in industrial freezers and similar sub-zero environments will need hooded freezer jackets, flame resistant trousers, as well as warm socks and undergarments.

Workers who handle harmful chemicals also need powerful protection. Their clothing must be able to protect them against highly corrosive chemicals such as concentrated acids. In most cases, the garments that protect  against these substances are also inherently flame resistant.
